Late autumn, after most of the leaves have fallen, is the ideal time for thorough pergola maintenance. Cleaning the roof and drainage system is especially important: leaves and debris can clog the gutters, and when frozen, form ice plugs that direct water in the wrong direction. As a general rule, it’s recommended to maintain your pergola once or twice a year.
Maintenance schedule – your quick checklist
- Autumn, before winter: Clean the roof and gutters.
- Spring: Remove accumulated pollen and dirt from winter; wash aluminum surfaces.
- Once a year (twice in coastal or forested areas): We recommend using the Renson Maintenance Set (Clean + Protect) to preserve the finish and ensure lasting protection.
Tools you’ll need:
A soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth, a leaf blower on a low setting (optional), a low-pressure garden hose, a bucket, and protective gloves. Avoid
hard brushes and high-pressure washers.
How to clean the aluminum roof of your pergola
- Open the roof blades to approximately - 90 °
- Remove loose debris by gently sweeping or blowing over the blades with a leaf blower on its lowest setting (avoid blowing directly toward motor covers, sensors, or recessed lights).
- Wash the surfaces by rinsing the blades with a gentle stream of water from a garden hose; if necessary, use lukewarm water and Renson Clean or a mild neutral detergent. Rinse thoroughly.
- Apply a protective layer by drying and coating the aluminum surfaces with Renson Protect – it creates a dirt-repellent layer and helps preserve the color. Avoid using Renson cleaning products in hot, sunny weather.
! Safety: Do not walk on the roof blades.
How to clean a fabric roof
- Remove loose dirt with a brush or a vacuum cleaner using a soft nozzle.
- Wash with lukewarm water and a suitable cleaning product (Renson Clean is also ideal for polyester roofs). Avoid hot sunlight and always rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Gutters and drainage
In Renson systems, rainwater is directed from the roof channels into the posts. Before winter:
- Remove leaves and debris from the gutters manually or with a brush.
- Rinse the gutters with a garden hose (start at the far end and move toward the water flow).
- Check the drainage at the posts: pour water into the gutter corner with a watering can and make sure it flows out from the bottom of the posts. In case of a blockage, use a long flexible brush or a drain snake.
Glass and screens
- Sun protection screens: remove dust with a brush or vacuum cleaner, wash with lukewarm water and a suitable cleaning product, do not use high pressure or clean in direct sunlight. Always rinse off any residue thoroughly.
- Glass: Use a standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth; avoid hard brushes.
Winter tips for the roof
- If you want to use your pergola during winter or store furniture underneath it, keep the roof closed year-round. Do not attempt to move the blades if they are frozen shut. If you do not plan to use the pergola in winter, it is recommended to keep the roof blades open at approximately 90 °.
What not to do (warranty and safety reminder)
- Do not use a pressure washer, hard brushes, or abrasive sponges.
- Do not use Renson maintenance products in direct sunlight or hot weather – the cleaner may dry too quickly, leaving stains.
- Please don't stand on the roof blades.
Why choose the Renson Maintenance Set?
Renson Clean removes everyday dirt, dust, oil, moss, and insect marks, while Renson Protect leaves a protective film that shields the surface from UV rays, salty sea air, and acid rain. This layer makes future cleaning easier and helps maintain a deep, lasting color. Recommended use: once a year (twice in coastal or forested areas).
Summary
- The best time for major maintenance is before winter, with a follow-up cleaning in spring.
- Start with the roof and drainage – clean gutters mean a worry-free winter.
- Use gentle tools and the Renson Clean & Protect combination.
- Do not use a pressure washer.
